Is this the Loggers year?
Canadian Championships August 27-31, 2025

Blake Hunter (above left) was part of the Hill United Chiefs undefeated run at the ISC World Championships, but will he enjoy the “double dip” and also help power the Sooke Loggers to a Canadian championship?
Coaches Chad Bryden and Brian Banner have assembled a versatile mix of veterans and youth for this years run at a Canadian championship. The club boasts three outstanding catchers; Hunter, Bryan Abrey, and Kyle Cowick – and all three play other infield postitions. All three sticks will definitely be in the lineup most games so will the coaches choose to rotate positions or do they stick with a set lineup defensively? It’s certainly a nice choice to have!
That trio could fill catcher, first and third, with lots of options for the middle infield.
Gus “magic hands” Wilson will likely get the nod at short and there’s plenty to choose from at second, between veteran Todd Belton or “jack of all trades” Dean Leyland. However, when the dust settles, look for Darcy Walushkas to fit in there, while brother Kris settles in center field.
Looking to the outfield, there’s a buffet of talent to choose from, prompting some difficult decisions. Veteran star Scott Nehaj has earned a spot and it’s unthinkable to have Ben Edgington’s bat out of the lineup – however there may be better options defensively.
Logan Neuman, Jessie Grieves, and Jarod Cooper can each bring something to the table given the situation.
Could Edgington go to first and move Abrey to the outfield, or use either as DH, or switch it up every game? Local fans will be interested to see what the coaches decide.
However, it’s the pitcher’s circle that has fans most hopeful for better performance. Scott Lieph is back in action, and will be joined by Tyson Barkman, Brian Banner, and Aaron Emery. That’s an impressive foursome that will give the Loggers one the best staffs in the tournament and yet another decision: does Tyson Barkman DH for the other pitchers?
